Challenged with the assignment to design and make a furniture piece intended for a specific site and inspired by the architecture of Louis Kahn, Claire designed the Home Lamp for the children’s rooms of the Korman House.
Claire designed this piece for the elective course Site Specific Furnishings taught by Peter Dean in the Fall of 2025.
12″ x 12″ x 60″ Cherry, Wool, Linen
Claire was inspired by Louis Kahn’s work at the Phillip Exeter Academy Library, where concrete crisscross beams meet in the center of the building, and natural light is dispersed through a strategic high sky-light, above giant circular openings in walls, highlighting the beauty in simple geometry.
In designing her lamp, she put herself in the mind and scale of a child, who she remembers feel the important responsibility of discovering hidden uses in otherwise “serious” places. She calls back on the form of the Phillip Exeter Academy in the hidden structure of the lamp, revealed for the children who inevitably will look beneath the shade, and curiously dissect and understand its beautiful construction.
She utilizes a birds mouth joint to achieve this reference.

Claire took color inspiration from the landscapes, exterior, and interior of the Korman House.
She opted for 100% natural materials and minimized material use, using less than 1 board of cherry wood harvested through traditional logging methods at Marsh Billings National Historical Park
